Would I need a vehicle manufactured during the year of these plates to use them? Guy is asking $20 a pair and they'd look pretty sweet on my truck. My Dad used to collect plates and nail them to the wall we definitely had some 30's plates but they're lose to the abyss of time.

In Virginia, you do.

I have a set on the Jag, but could not get any for the Mini, since VA started using stickers a few years before the Mini's year of registration.

As long as the plates haven't been issued, Virginia lets you use them for your car. There are plenty of plate collectors out there that have these things horded in their basement. The guy I contacted years ago had like 20 sets of new, non-issued plates from 1970 for me to choose from.

I don't want to know what is going on in this picture.

It was the first photo of my "dated" plate I had.

The one time McMike posts a non-photoshopped photo, it's glorious.

Normally to use antique plates, yes they need to be from the year of manufacture. Like mine :)

In most states, yes. They are exemptions made for year of manufacture. Some states require you to have a current Antique Vehicle plate for the car, which has to be kept in the car, but you're allowed to display the year of manufacture plate on the vehicle.

I'd look up your DOT regs in...what appears to be...Maine.

Most likely it does, and there can be other caveats as well so check thoroughly before buying a vintage plate. In my state, the plate has to be from the year of manufacture AND never been registered before. So you need to find an unissued plate. You also have to send in paperwork and pictures of your car so they verify that it is a classic and the make/model you claim.

I have quite a few, when I get enough, I intend to line my garage ceiling with them...

I'm collecting them to do the interior of my truck in them.
